Did you know that for every four people who inquire about Annapolis & Anne Arundel County, three of them come to visit? The CVB staff members answering the visitors' queries are on the front lines of tourism, and they have plenty of backup. The CVB's print advertising, billboards, television and radio ads, online resources, and other media make it possible for us to tell the world about our unique and historic corner of the world. And 64 percent of visitors remember seeing our ads—which means that tourism advertising works.
In fact, tourism promotion is a revenue generator, not a cost, to taxpayers. It pays for itself—and other programs—by attracting visitors to the city and county. In FY 2005/2006, ad-driven visitors who sought information from our CVB spent $11.6 million, $500,000 of which was tax revenue. In other words, for every dollar allocated to tourism advertising, $3.41 was returned to the county.
Visitors who see ads and then conduct their own research (for instance, on the Internet) spend even more of their disposable income here---$248 million on their trips, which brought $6 million to the county in tax revenue. Comparing this revenue to the total marketing budget of the CVB shows that the county receives a $7 return for every $1 spent. That's a pretty impressive return on investment (ROI).
