2007 Media Plan Maximizes Advertising Dollars
The CVB plans to maximize the effectiveness of its $153,000 media budget by targeting specific markets and allocating advertising dollars to a more diverse mix of media outlets at strategic times of the year. The fiscal year 2007 campaign focuses on the outer markets of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Delaware and the inner markets of Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia. Using a variety of tactics, the CVB plans to blitz the outer markets from March through June and the inner markets from May through October.
The CVB plan is designed to reach people where they live and work – through increased Internet buys including Southwest Airline's Featured Destination, Washington Post on-line, Philadelphia Magazine on-line, and Travelocity. New this year are metro train station posters and billboards. At the same time, magazine and newspaper advertisements will reinforce the Come Sail Away brand. The goal of this clustering approach is to have prospective visitors feel that the Come Sail Away message is reaching them everywhere they turn for vacation information.
Paid advertising efforts will be reinforced by the day-to-day activities of the CVB staff. The Sales Department will participate in sales missions, events, and trade shows in the targeted areas. Susan Steckman from Communications will encourage articles, cable, and broadcast coverage by visiting media representatives and remaining in close contact with travel writers from the designated markets. At the same time, our presence in Pittsburgh will continue, but two-thirds of the budget has been reallocated to support the new market launch.
For a detailed media schedule, call Connie Del Signore at extension 13. For a complete list of cooperative advertising opportunities, visit www.visitannapolis.org to view our Marketing Opportunities 2007 plan.
National Icon Supports National Sailing Hall Of Fame
Television legend Walter Cronkite is doing his part to help ensure a bright future for the National Sailing Hall of Fame (NSHF) in Annapolis. During a September 14 reception in his honor, the news icon and avid sailor announced that he is now serving as Chairman of the NSHF Advisory Board. The museum opened under tent at City Dock this past spring.

MATPRA Media Marketplace A Success Susan Steckman was among the 53 tourism professionals who promoted their destinations to the nearly 50 print and broadcast representatives who attended the Mid-Atlantic Tourism Public Relations Alliance’s Media Marketplace in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania September 6-8. As a follow-up to the Marketplace, the Conference and Visitors Bureau will be hosting some of the journalists on their visits to Annapolis and Anne Arundel County this fall. Annapolis Has Style
Annapolis and Anne Arundel County will be appearing on the pages of DC Style and Philadelphia Style Magazines next summer thanks to an August visit by the publications’ Beauty Editor Tracey Giordano. Tracey was quite impressed with Annapolis and its close proximity to the magazines' Philadelphia and DC area readers.
Kids Love Maryland
Families across the country who want to spend their next vacation at a kid-friendly destination need only look between the covers of a Kids Love Maryland book that is now in the works. In cooperation with the Maryland Office of Tourism Development, the CVB hosted Ohio-based travel writers George and Michele Zavatsky and their two children as they sought out Annapolis and Anne Arundel County’s kid-friendly accommodations, restaurants, attractions, and services during an August 21-23 visit.
Thanks To Our Members
The media visits listed above were made possible in part by the generous contributions of many CVB members including: Herrington Harbour Inn at Herrington Harbour Marina Resort, Pirate’s Cove Restaurant, Chick and Ruth’s Delly, U.S. Naval Academy/Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center, Watermark, Carrol’s Creek Café, History Quest, Buddy’s Crabs and Ribs, and Annapolis Ice Cream Company. Thank you again for all that you do to help promote Annapolis and Anne Arundel County.
Travels With Kal
CVB Board Member and Marine Trades Association of Maryland Executive Director Susan Zellers and Susan Steckman invited Connecticut-area listeners to visit Annapolis and Anne Arundel County during a live interview with WLIS/WMRD host Kal London on his August 8 Travels with Kal radio program. The duo filled listeners in on the new attractions in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County and invited them to experience the destination by water using the Landings brochure recently released by the Four Rivers Heritage Area.

American Society of Association Executives
Joyce Baki brought meeting planners up to date on the new attractions and experiences that await groups in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County during the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Annual Meeting and Exposition in Boston August 19-22.
The CVB worked the Maryland Office of Tourism Development booth along with representatives from Ocean City, the state, and Baltimore, Montgomery, and Washington counties. Together, they met with 47 customers who represented 41 associations throughout the United States.
Tye’s Top Tours FAM Tour
Our New England neighbors got a taste of warm Annapolis hospitality when Tye’s Top Tours from Manchester, New Hampshire brought 22 of its group leaders to Annapolis and Anne Arundel County for a whirlwind familiarization tour August 15-16. Thanks to the help of Matt Grubbs and Discover Annapolis Tours, the group enjoyed a comfortable visit, despite the oppressive heat.
Other CVB member partners who made the tour possible include: U.S. Naval Academy/Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center, Watermark, History Quest, Historic Annapolis Foundation, Capital City Colonials, Lebanese Taverna, Phillips Annapolis Harbor, Marriott BWI Airport Hotel, Historic Electronics Museum, Four Points by Sheraton BWI, National Cryptologic Museum, and Cactus Willie’s Steak and Buffet. Thank you all for your gracious hospitality.
Affordable Meetings
CVB member accommodations had the opportunity to respond to an additional five requests for proposals following the Affordable Meetings national tradeshow at the Washington, D.C. Convention Center September 6-7. Andrew Heidt returned with the leads after he and CVB member partners from the Doubletree Annapolis (formerly the Radisson), O’Callaghan Hotel Annapolis, and Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament met with more than 120 meeting planners.
A seven percent increase in booth traffic over last year is attributed in part to the fact that the CVB mailed an advance flyer inviting the more than 1500 pre-registered meeting planners to stop by the booth and register to win two round-trip airline tickets generously donated by Southwest Airlines.

Escapes Contest Winners
Dover, Delaware residents Karen and Richard Lyle celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary with a four-hour Chesapeake Bay sailing charter compliments of South River Boat Rentals after winning the CVB’s June 9-July 9 Spring Escapes contest. Chosen from among more than 700 entries, the couple redeemed their Annapolis Adventure prize during an August 25-27 visit. Come Sail Away Beverage Competition
There are now officially nine more ways to Come Sail Away in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County. That’s because nine member restaurants and attractions have created their own unique, alcoholic and non-alcoholic Come Sail Away beverages.
After an evening of taste testing in July, a panel of judges picked three winners: Metropolitan Restaurant, Kyma, and the John Barry Restaurant and Bar at the O’Callaghan Hotel Annapolis.
CVB Volunteer Information Specialists are promoting the beverages by wearing Come Sail Away buttons and by handing out a list of all participants including: Rams Head, Sean Donlon’s, Middleton’s, the Weather Rail at the Loews Annapolis Hotel, Watermark’s Harbor Queen and Boatyard Bar and Grill.

Maryland’s Tax Free Holidays
Severna Park resident Donna Lizewski was rewarded in more ways than one when she shopped in Annapolis during Maryland’s August 23-27 Tax Free Holidays promotion. Like thousands of other smart consumers, Donna took advantage of the event that exempted shoppers from paying Maryland’s five-percent sales tax on qualifying clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less. Not only did Donna save money, she won the CVB’s Tax Free Holiday Escape contest that entitles her to a complimentary night’s stay for two at the Annapolitan Bed and Breakfast during the winter holidays.
To help CVB member retailers reap the fullest benefits of Maryland’s Tax Free Holidays promotion, the CVB developed a sweepstakes entry drawing that shoppers could sign up for at participating stores. Donna submitted her winning entry at a la mode lingerie. Her name was drawn during the September Marketing Meeting.
Going Green
CVB members know a little bit more about how to position their properties and attractions as green meeting sites thanks to a presentation by Visit Pittsburgh’s Executive Director of Convention Sales Craig Davis at the September 12 Marketing Meeting at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Attendees shared the word about environmental efforts underway at their businesses and explored the possibilities of adding others after hearing about the world's largest green building, Pittsburgh's David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
The program coordinated by Nautical Destinations' Lynne Forsman wrapped up with a Marketing Partners Hour compliments of Rams Head Tavern and Fordham Brewing Company, Linganore Wineries, and Tapenade Catering.
The next Marketing Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 10, at the Country Inn and Suites in Annapolis. We hope to see you there.

Getting To The Boat Shows
Boat Show organizers, the CVB, and the City of Annapolis are teaming up to help ensure that parking and transportation for this year’s Boat Shows will be smooth sailing once again.
Boating enthusiasts attending the October 5-9 U.S. Sailboat and October 12-15 U.S. Power Boat Shows should find ample and easy parking, thanks to frequently running shuttle buses and an abundance of public and private lots for Boat Show parking.
Every day but Saturday, October 14, Boat Show attendees may park their cars at the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium on Rowe Boulevard (Route 50, exit 24) for a flat $10 fee and take a free round-trip shuttle to the Boat Show at City Dock. The shuttles will run regularly to Church Circle and City Dock from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., with the last shuttle departing from Church Circle at 8:45 p.m.
On Saturday, October 14, Boat Show attendees may take Route 50 to exit 22 (Aris T. Allen Boulevard) and follow signs for Boat Show parking along Riva Road. Motorists may park their cars for a flat $10 fee and hop aboard a free Boat Show shuttle bus that will run from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Advance Boat Show tickets are available online at www.usboat.com.

Expansion News
The CVB’s Volunteer Information Specialists will be greeting and assisting travelers from a new location beginning January 3. While our eight-to-twelve-month expansion project is underway, the CVB Visitors Center will operate from the lobby of the Arundel Center at 44 Calvert Street. The nearby location will enable visitors to continue using Gott’s Court garage. New directional signs will be posted in the garage and on the grounds to direct tourists to the temporary Visitors Center.
The CVB staff won’t be moving far away either. Between Christmas and New Year’s, we will be setting up shop in offices above Cook’s Revenge at 197 Main Street. Until the 26 West Street building reopens in late 2007, phones will be answered and mail will be sent from the Main Street office location. |
