A Tribute To Duke Ellington Starring The John Blount-Dave Tucker Big Band
In the jazz world, no one stands taller than Edward Kennedy Duke Ellington the subject of the latest concert presented by Wings Productions.
This urbane man from Washington D.C. produced literally thousands of compositions - works that have become standards and elegant contributions to American Music. From its beginnings in the 1920s to Dukes passing in the 1970s, the Ellington Orchestra was his instrument and a home for many of the most renowned musicians in jazz.
The music of Duke Ellington will be played by the outstanding 16-piece John Blount/Dave Tucker Big Band. The concert will feature classic Ellington arrangements from sultry early compositions like Black & Tan Fantasy and Mood Indigo to mid-career swingers like Cottontail and In A Mellow Tone as well as Strayhorn classics such as Take The A Train and Juan Tizol arrangements of Caravan and Perdido. Narrated by Jazz Straight Ahead co-hosts, Jan and Eric Tegler, stories about Duke Ellington and his music will be woven throughout the concert.
