Come Sail Away to the U.S. Naval Academy, one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the nation. The graduation hat-toss is perhaps the most famous of all commissioning week traditions. As you explore the 338-acre campus, known as "the Yard," you'll discover that the Naval Academy is defined by such traditions — so much so that the entire campus has been designated a National Historic Landmark. With all that terrain to cover, it’s a good thing the Navy is so welcoming — just be sure to bring a photo ID to Gate One in order to gain entrance.
The Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center, located at the foot of King George Street, is the place to start your visit to the Academy. It features an information center, gift shop, a sample midshipmen's room and the "Freedom 7," America’s first manned spacecraft, flown by Naval Academy graduate Alan Shepard. Stop by to view the 12-minute film “Leaders of Character," which chronicles the intensely structured and rigorous days and nights of the midshipmen. The Visitor Center also offers tours led by Academy guides — the best way to get an insider’s view of the Yard.
