This November offers two can’t-miss art exhibits in Annapolis; First Folio! The Book That Gave us Shakespeare, and Darkest Before the Dawn.

The First Folio – held at the Elizabeth Myers Mitchell Gallery on the campus of St. John’s College – is the first complete collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays, collated and published in 1623, seven years after his death. Since no original manuscripts survive, the First Folio preserves 36 of Shakespeare’s plays, including 18 previously unpublished plays. St. John’s College, in partnership with the Annapolis Shakespeare Company for programming support, has been named the institutional host for Maryland. The Mitchell Gallery is the only venue in Maryland to exhibit this traveling display from the Folger Shakespeare Library. The exhibit will be on display from November 1^st through December 4^th.

An Annapolis staple in the arts community, Maryland Hall for Creative Arts has been hosting art classes, performances, exhibits, workshops, and demonstrations since 1979. This November, Maryland Hall will feature their latest exhibit, Darkest Before the Dawn, highlighting the misconception of dark colors. "For too long dark colors have been categorized to describe feelings of eeriness or troublesome," says guest curator Thomas James. "Dark colors are a lot more diverse than they are given credit for." Perfect for any art lover, this exhibit will be on display from November 10^th to December 17^th.

The Maritime republic of Eastport’s Tug of War is known as the longest international tug of war over water in the world. Drawing on a decades old rivalry, the annual charitable event pits downtown Annapolitans against the rebels of the mock-breakaway Maritime Republic of Eastport. Dubbed the Slaughter Across the Water, it features a 1700-foot rope draped across the Annapolis Harbor, 450 tuggers and 1,000 spectators. A festival-like atmosphere overtakes downtown Eastport and Annapolis beginning at 11:00 a.m. viewable from the Annapolis City Dock. The event kicks off at noon on November 5^th.

A county favorite for families, Lights on the Bay is the perfect way to get in the holiday spirit this November. The drive-through light show features more than 60 animated and stationary holiday displays, all set against the Chesapeake Bay in Sandy Point State Park. The display is open every night (weather permitting) from November 22^nd to January 1^st, 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 per car.
