“Laurence Hurst Anniversary Show” and “Songs of the Caged Bird”

The Banneker-Douglass Museum celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture and their own 35th Anniversary with the opening of two art exhibitions, the “Laurence Hurst Anniversary Show” and the “Songs of the Caged Bird.” The Laurence Hurst exhibit features artwork spanning 50 years by Mr. Hurst, the Museum’s first Artist-In-Residence. “Songs of the Caged Bird” is a dynamic exhibition featuring Maryland based African American artists.
Check out the Opening Reception on January 12 from 3 - 5 pm. RSVP requested. Exhibitions open January 8 through June 8, 2019.
Arundel on the Bay Book Signing

Celebrate the recently published The Amazing Story of Arundel-on-the-Bay: 1600s to Today at a celebration and book signing this Thursday, January 10. Local history enthusiasts can get their copy signed by the authors from 6:00- 8:00 pm at Back Creek Books (194 Main Street). Enjoy complimentary wine and snacks while meeting the authors. The book chronicles the waterfront community’s evolution since its 1890 beginnings. What emerges in the telling is a portrait of America’s social and cultural history that shaped a community.
A Tribute to MLK
Celebrate the positive message of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through the power of performing arts at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts on January 19 at 6 pm. A Tribute to MLK will feature live music, spoken word including an interpretation of “I Had a Dream” and open mic in honor of King. The fun evening will include light refreshments and an opportunity to purchase Happy Hour beverages. Geared towards a millenial audience - with all ages welcomed - the event takes place in the newly renovated Bowen Theatre.

Annapolis Maritime Museum Winter Lecture Series

It’s a winter tradition! The Annapolis Maritime Museum Winter Lecture Series will be held on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. from January 10 to February 28. The series will cover eight diverse topics including maritime history, local history, science and maritime art. Topics this month include “Memoir of a Skipjack: These iconic vessels are a window into Chesapeake heritage” and “Exploring the Water Trail of Captain John Smith: 1,800 Miles in Capt. Smith’s Wake.”

Captain Avery Museum Lecture Series
And for the lunch crowd...the Captain Avery Museum in Shady Side kicks off their Annual Winter Luncheon Series this month too. The annual program begins January 23rd and runs for six consecutive Wednesdays through February 27th. Come hear engaging speakers then enjoy a delicious meal of homemade soup, specialty breads, dessert and beverages. Upcoming topics include “A 13th Century Mystery in the American Southwest” and “The Dung Beetles of Liberia.”
Offered at the Captain Avery Museum in Shady Side. Fees vary for members and non-members. Purchase admission to the whole series or individual sessions.
