It’s that time of year when hats and coats are essential, colorful lights outline houses and trees, familiar holiday classics abound on the radio, and a few extra chocolate chip cookies or hot chocolate drinks make their way into the daily hustle and bustle. There’s an accentuated feeling of joy and celebration in the air, and Annapolis is a great place to partake in the festivities of the season. The busy and exciting scene of shoppers throughout State Circle/Maryland Avenue, West Street (the Annapolis Arts and Entertainment District), Main Street, and City Dock is what makes Midnight Madness such a merry event. If you've never experienced the Midnight Madness – or couldn’t attend this year – here's a quick breakdown of all that you missed!

Midnight Madness is an Annapolis holiday tradition in which local stores remain open until midnight (only on three Thursdays in December), offering promotions, entertainment, drinks, and sweet goodies to those perusing for gifts. Storefronts are decorated with bows, lights, and garlands while the sidewalks feature painters, musicians, and ringing bells. The event is an opportunity for both residents and visitors to learn about and support Annapolis ventures – most of whom have been around for several years, making the city a truly unique, quaint, and beautiful place to enjoy the holidays. Some of the highlights from this and every year's Midnight Madness include:

  • Live alpacas outside Alpaca International, a garment shop featuring alpaca wool from Peru.
  • Hot Jamaican Tea by City Dock Coffee.
  • The police department Christmas tree by City Dock - celebrating 150 years.
  • The unnamed band playing Christmas tunes right next to the tree.
  • A pop-up shop promoting local artists and designers.
  • Radio station tents including WRNR 103.1 FM with giveaways and games.
  • Boats on Ego Alley featuring lights and Santa on what you may call, a new type of sleigh.
  • Locals dressed up in Christmas galore – from simple hats, to fancy velvet gowns.
  • Free parking!
