The Annapolis Arts District is one of the most walkable communities in this region, but how can we expect visitors to know this if they are not from this area? Well, this problem was an easy fix for Sally Wern Comport, Principal of Art at Large, Inc. A MAP! A simple yet significant idea, Comport was responsible for designing a wall map that highlights Annapolis’ districts that are a walkable distance from the Visitors Center on West St.

Comport redesigned the Visitors Center building back in 2014 and as part of the work, she created and installed a beautiful wall map of Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, and the Chesapeake Bay. The map was designed to be functional for VAAAC Volunteers, so they could direct visitors to attractions, restaurants, and accommodations and it is still heavily used in that capacity today.

During this month’s filming, I was lucky enough to sit down with Comport to talk about both of these maps, her company and beginnings as a leading woman in the arts realm, and her love for Annapolis.

In addition to projects such as this, Comport’s company - Art at Large - is responsible for creating many different types of art displays and installations in leading healthcare institutions, museums, residential buildings, and more! We are grateful to have such stellar, industry-leading companies working right here in Annapolis, MD.

As if speaking with Sally in-person wasn’t enough, contractors were installing the brand-new map while we were conducting our interview – talk about showcasing process in ‘real time’! From art galleries to creative workspaces, Annapolis has an array of artful venues everyone should be aware of. This new map will be such a great resource for new Annapolis visitors, as well as us Annapolis-frequenters that might not be aware of everything we have available to us right here in our city!

We thank Sally for sitting down and speaking with us and Art at Large for continuing to value Annapolis. Until next time, Thomas.
