Annapolis Discovered recently caught up with Gloria Davis Harberts, the Southern Area Regional Manager, at the Michael E. Busch Annapolis Library for a tour. The library, named after Maryland’s former Speaker of the House, opened in July 2020 with a virtual ribbon cutting ceremony.

The Libary's LEED Design

It’s the newest library in Anne Arundel County in 16 years! This new 32,500 square foot, $24 million state-of-the-art facility was built from the ground up. The library is the first building in the county to receive LEED Gold Certification for innovative and environmentally friendly construction and design.

This new library is a cornerstone in the Annapolis community and is designed with the public in mind. There is a children’s area with a story time stage, launch pads and plenty of reading corners to curl up with a good book. The library staff also put in a great deal of thought into the Teen Area with comfortable modular seating, bold colors, and what every teen wants- charging stations! This area also has one of the best views in the library.

Library Meeting Space & More

The new building has two private rooms that the public can reserve for meetings, workspace, and homework. There is abundant wi-fi, the internet connection is so strong, visitors can connect from the parking lot. A wonderful feature for those who are unable to purchase monthly internet access.

As seen in the video, the new ‘Makers Space’ is designed for multi-generational use. There is a Memory Lab where visitors can convert old vinyl and photos to digital memories. In addition to the lab, there is a sewing machine, worktable as well as a button maker and heat press. Not only does the library plan to add a 3-D printer to the Makers Space before the end of the year, but the Staff is also trained on how to use the equipment. It is their hope that visitors, young and old, will engage with one another to inspire and create!

Library Goes Hi-Tech

Curb side pick-up, five electric vehicle charging stations, 85,000 brand new books, free wi-fi and a café’- everyone is sure to find something to spark the imagination at the new Michael E. Busch Annapolis Library.
